Pride and Prejudice — Edward Elric

Edward Elric by TWILTHERO

So. . .The only Twilty moveset I’ll probably end up reviewing in MYM 5. Let’s get this over with, shall we? . . .Oh wait. This is for a FMA char. Yay! And it’s actually pretty good too! Let’s take a closer look.

Move Originality: I love the neutral special and all the various little effects in it. Very creative. Without a doubt a highlight of the moveset. While the effects for the neutral special on some stages are meh, it’s kind of hard not to be what with you having to do something for every stage, and there are enough good effects to more then make up for it. The Side Special and Down Special are completely brilliant as well, no problems with those. Very well done, albeit the down special is very OOC. As for the automail mechanic, it’s decent, but you don’t really do all that much with it and it just adds more reading. I don’t feel it helps the moveset all that much. While there are a decent few standards that aren’t all that, they at least do have the automail mechanic to back them slightly, and there are hidden gems throughout the main moveset such as the nair and dthrow. The Final Smash is also really crazy and out there in a similar manner to your specials. Good job. This actually resembles what a realistic inclusion of Edward would be like if here to be included in Smash with specials (And final smash) that are actually special, those being the main selling point. You could stand a tad bit more creativity in the non specials, but I would still put this as a step up from your previous works.

Detail: Almost everything is finely explained, and there are even sprites to help the reader along in visualizing the moves. For the most part throughout this moveset, this is very easy to picture. However; you still have the problem you’ve had for all your previous movesets: Taking forever to explain an overly simple move. This makes the descriptions slightly tedious. The dsmash in particular doesn’t have all that many changes based on the charge and these changes could probably all be summed up in one paragraph. The only part of the moveset that needs MOAR detail is the various effects of the neutral special, which virtually never mention percentages or anything worth noting.

Playstyle: I’m glad you added a nice big juicy detailed playstyle section upon my request. This is very welcome. . .So now let’s see what you tell me of his playstyle. . .Not much. You basically just talk more about how his individual moves work. How do these moves flow together to make a character with a specific theme? You don’t mention much of that besides that Ed racks damage at a range and gets up close to KO. From what I can deduce Ed doesn’t really have that much of a playstyle theme besides that. . .*Shrug*. . .So. . .You might wanna work harder at that on your next set.

Balance: Edward seems to have damage racking abilities and KO options at his disposal, and he also has plenty of moves with a disjointed nature and long range. If nothing else though, Ed’s damage percentages outputs are very weak, so that balances him out slightly. You’ve gotta keep in mind that Mario’s fsmash does 17% uncharged, man, and it hardly has any lag. Ed would probably be about where you put him in High tier, seeing he also has around average attack speed. This is decent enough, I suppose. The Final Smash on the other hand is rather weak, buff it, particularly how much damage the foe takes from the gate.

Relevance to Character: This for the most part is very true to character. Excellent use of Ed’s automail and alchemy in this moveset. There are hardly any outright bad attacks in the moveset thanks to the clever use of Edward’s abilities, and you capitalize on this by taking some creative influence on moves like the neutral special. This is spot on. The only thing I can really critique as far as this goes is that down special. . .While it is epic, Ed more than learned his lesson when he tried human alchemy and failed, creating Sloth. You as a fellow FMA fanatic should know this. Still, it makes for an epic move, so it’s probably not worth getting rid of.

Extras: EPIC. I LOVE these extras. The SSE Role, the assist trophy, the stage, they’re all BRILLIANT. The rest of the extras are very meh though.

Organization: Nothing wrong with it, and the sprites boost your points up a good bit here. Although I would prefer if you sized down those MASSIVE headers. . .They’re rather annoying. Other then that no problems here. I’m not the organization nazi.

Overall: A good improvement from most of your sets, particularly in originality. I love Ed’s specials save the up one and the final smash, and there are very few outright generic moves. This is an excellent way to enter MYM 5. Still, some of your old problems such as lack of a defined playstyle and annoying detail/awkward writing style problems manage to persist. These two things should probably be what you should most focus on in future movesets. You’ve got the other main categories, creativity and balance, down just fine. I honestly don’t know how relevant to character you were before due to not knowing any of your other characters, but you’re fine here. Anyway, this is a good step up, but I feel you’ve still got more potential. Keep at it, soldier.

  1. 1) For the standard attacks, i’ll see what i can do about creativity. Though….could you tell me which attacks could use more creativity?

    2) For the down smash…..yeah, i thought so. I’ll shorten it down to 1-2 paragraphs in a bit.

    3) For the playstyle…..well…guess i’ll see what i can do. I’ll try adding how moves work together or something.

    4) For balence, yeah i guess i’ll boost up the smash attacks or something. And i’ll boost up the final smash.

    5) I’ll also size down the headers.

    6) Thanks for the review detail-nazi.

    7) This may seem kind of random, but i always have been wondering if BB Code works here.

  6. I am awesome.

Here, HTML rules. No BBCode for you!

  7. If this doesn’t work…

Meh. Not exactly a fan of the new titles for reviews, but I don’t see that changing. Also, the thread was released early? O_o

    *gets to work on CSS*

  8. Yay! Free HTML tutorials ftw!
