Getting Started

Welcome!

If you’re here then, first of all Welcome to MYM! But more importantly, this probably means you have some questions. Hopefully this page will answer those for you.

What is MYM?

Make Your Move (or MYM for short) is a community of creative types who are fans of the Super Smash Bros series of games. We express our passion for this franchise, and gaming as a whole, by imagining how new characters would function if added to the game. We then pitch those ideas as hypothetical Movesets

There is no push to make those Movesets a reality, so there really is no cap on how creative the community can be. It’s design-doc fanfiction; anything goes!

MYM is split up into a series of contests, which are roughly annual, and last about half a year. The contest itself is hosted on the Smashboards forum, but you’ll find the community is most active in our Discord. Create a moveset for your favourite character(s), and pitch ’em to the rest of the community. At the end of the contest, we all gather to vote for the best and brightest Movesets.

What is a Moveset?

A Moveset, in the traditional sense, is a list of moves/actions that a character can perform in a video game. You might already be familiar with them if you play a lot of Action or Fighting games. A player won’t get very far if they don’t know what their character can do, right?

This, naturally, extends to Super Smash Bros. As a Fighting game (yes, it’s a Fighting game, let’s not get into that argument here) every character has their own unique set of attacks. Most of these moves are performed by pressing the Attack or Special button whilst also tilting the movement stick in a certain direction.

In Make Your Move, a Moveset is expected to include 23 attacks. This is not an absolute requirement, but consider it a firm guideline, especially if you’re new to making Movesets. If you have solid reasoning, and aren’t just being a lazy bum, you can have a Moveset with fewer moves.

Or you could make one with more moves if you’d like. There’s no rule against that.

The best way to get a handle on what making a Moveset entails, is to just read some. The Movesets section of this site documents every moveset ever posted, but since that’s literally thousands of sets from over 15 years of MYM… it might be better to just ask a member of the community for some recommended reading. To get you started, here is a list of some shorter movesets posted in MYM26;

  • [Peppino Spaghetti written by bubbyboytoo]: A highly kinetic character. This moveset is effortlessly conveyed with the aid of short animations from Peppino’s game – Pizza Tower
  • [Black Knight written by majora_787]: A dangerous character who buffs his attack in return for recoil damage. This moveset uses helpful icons to mark moves that interact with the character’s Special Mechanic
How do I get started?

The three pillars of being a member of the MYM community are;

  • Write Movesets: There are very few hard rules as to what constitutes a moveset. Have fun, develop your own style, whatever. They can be in practically any form, but we do ask that you create a post in the MYM Thread on smashboards, just to let us know that you’ve made one and where to find it.
  • Read Movesets: No point in having dozens of amazing movesets if nobody reads them, right? It is a common courtesy to give other movesets a read, even if many of them are novel sized epics. And once you’re done reading, you can give some feedback in the form of a Comment! Tell the author what you liked, and what you think could be improved on. Unleash your inner critic.
  • Interact with the Community: Probably goes without saying that you have to be part of the community in order to be part of the community.
    • The Discord is the main place to chat, and the best opportunity to talk directly with a moveset’s author.
    • The Bunker (you’re there now!) is a bit antiquated, but primarily acts as a repository for links to all sorts of stuff. From old MYM contests and Movesets, to lists of individual creators, this is generally where you go when you’re looking for something.

The best place to start is the Discord. Our members will almost certainly answer any queries you may have, and help you get started on writing your first moveset. Don’t worry too much about stacking up to other movesets; MYM may be a “contest”, but really it’s all about finding and developing your own particular style. Focus on your ideas, and what you feel is the best way to bring them across. There’s always time to improve with your second, third or fourth moveset, and there’s no rule saying you can’t go back and make changes to a moveset after you posted it.

You can write your moveset in a Smashboards post in the MYM Thread, or you can write it up elsewhere and post a link for others to find it. Whatever works for you is fine.

What are the Rules?

For the sake of simplicity, MYM enforces the same general Rules as the Smashboards Forums. More specifically, we do not tolerate hateful speech or harassment.
A general catch-all is to not be a jerk, and to recognise that members of the community have different backgrounds and tolerances.

In addition, MYM Movesets are required to abide by Smashboard’s policy on Inappropriate Content. This is true even of Movesets that are not hosted directly on Smashboards. Movesets cannot contain violent, profane or pornographic images, neither may they contain excessive profanity.

Tips and Guides

The MYM Community is, at this point, a font of knowledge in regards to writing fun and engaging Movesets. You may, of course, ask for help on the Discord. But we have also gone through the trouble of collating some of our sagely advice here;
